Concerto for oboe and strings: Reduction for oboe and piano $22.95 A capricious, lyrical, and nostalgic work, it is often considered to be Vaughan Williams’ most successful work in this form. The first movement is pastoral in feeling, The second movement begins with a minuet, light and staccato in nature with a middle section featuring a musette’s characteristic long-held drone played by the oboe with the melody in the strings. The third movement is a scherzo and… |

String Quartet in C Minor: Parts (Parts) (Ralph Vaughan Williams: The Early Works) $14.45 Quartet in C is in four movements with a total duration of about 25 minutes. The opening Allegro is Dvorák-ish in its lyricism, though there is a darker, more brooding atmosphere towards the close. It is tempting to detect a hint of folk-song in the theme of the Andantino, played by the viola, but that may be stretching hindsight too far. The movement has a wistful melancholy that carries over in… |

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis $60 This piece combines the simple, elegant thematic material of Elizabethan church composer Thomas Tallis, expanded and modernized through the luxurious harmonies of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Holst: Brook Green Suite for string orchestra H190; Moorside Suite for brass band H173 $18.98 If you love the music of Gustav Holst, you either already have or you’re about to get this disc. Seven of the eight works on the program are prime examples of the composer’s post-Planets maturity receiving their world-premiere recordings and they have a tangible sense of excitement. More than that, all the performances here have an overwhelming sense of passionate advocacy because the conductor is Imogen Holst, the composer’s daughter. Agile, strong, bright, direct, and immensely appealing, her performances seemed at the time of release to be as convincing as imaginable — and subsequent recordings, though perhaps better performed, have not improved upon them. Above all, the music is wonderful. Cool, witty, robust, brilliant, and vivacious, Holst’s post-Planets music — his Fugal Concerto for flute, oboe & strings, and especially his Lyric Movement — is as fine in its way as the best postwar English music by Vaughan Williams, Walton, or Bax — and distinctly individualistic, too. Although some might say his lyricism is too austere, his forms too cerebral, and his emotions too etiolated, none would say that Holst doesn’t say exactly what he wants to say exactly the way he wants to say it — and none would say that his daughter does not enthusiastically and energetically make the best possible case for his music. Lyrita’s stereo sound is deep, detailed, and delightful. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |

Rhapsody on a Theme by Gustav Holst $45 Grade 3–4The tuneful strains of English folk music are heard throughout this creative new work for strings. One of Holst’s most revered symphonic works, Suite in E-flat for Military Band, has been transformed into an impressive concert piece, written in the style of folk song settings popularized by Holst himself and his long-time friend, Ralph Vaughan Williams. Dur: 4:00 |

USED: Vaughan Williams: A London Symphony; Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis $6.99 Adrian Boult’s 1952 Decca recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A London Symphony remained the standard version until 1971, when he revisited it with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on EMI; it is this latter rendition that has been a mainstay of the catalog, while the earlier mono recording has been relegated to sporadic reissues on small labels. Even so, this performance, along with the 1975 reading of the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, is a classic in its own right, against which other performances are often measured, for Boult’s sympathetic understanding of Vaughan Williams’ music, character, and culture is perhaps unmatchable; even though other conductors have turned in exceptional performances of this evocative pre-World War I work, they have still generally followed Boult’s lead. Of course, this is the finalized edition of the work, which was published in 1936 by Eulenburg, to be distinguished from the original 1913 version that Richard Hickox brilliantly recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra for Chandos, but that may be held in a class by itself since that is the only recording. The tighter, shorter edition of A London Symphony is expertly conducted by Boult and resolutely played by the LPO, who bring across all the atmospheric orchestration, inventive colors, and special “London sounds” that made this piece an enduring favorite, especially among English audiences. The performance of the Fantasia is lush and shimmering, and the string orchestra is warmly reproduced in the transfer. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi |
