Beethoven Bach Mozart

Why are Bach/Beethoven/Mozart considered to be the best composers ever?
I never hear anyone say that Ravel, Ralph Vaughan Williams, or even Mahler are the best composers ever, why? Isn’t is all opinion anyway? What makes any one composer better than any other? Do you think that a lot of people people are biased against modern music when they choose who they think is the best composer?
And by modern, I basicaly mean anything past the romantic era.
These 3 composers are considered by most musicians to be the best because not only did they write terrific music, they set the standard for their era. They took music as it was in their time and moved it forward, essentially creating a new era of music. Bach took mundane Baroque music and transformed his era to one that set the stage for the Early Classical era. Mozart took the early Classical era to its height and set the stage for Beethoven. Beethoven successfully changed the early Classical era into the middle Classical era with his 3rd Symphony. All three set the standard by which all others are compared. That is why they are considered by most to be the best composers ever.

Artur Schnabel – Scholar of the Piano [Box Set] $55.98 For his time, Schnabel was certainly a “scholar of the piano,” as he is called in the title of this EMI box set. He was better read than most of his contemporaries, and his interpretations of the central Austro-Germanic repertoire are thoroughly informed by his insights into the music and knowledge of the composers. But the appellation only goes so far in describing Schnabel’s playing. Hearing him for the first time, his impetuous performances, reckless tempo changes, sometimes sloppy technique, and above all his highly poetic interpretations leave the impression of a highly emotional, even spiritual player rather than that of a scholar. His rhapsodic account of Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, his ethereal reading of Mozart’s C major Piano Concerto, and his sublime accounts of Beethoven’s final three piano sonatas, all highlights of this collection, are perfect examples of this quality. So, the choice of title risks alienating listeners who disdain intellectualism in music as well as listeners looking for urtext recordings. And, for many contemporary listeners, the mere fact that most of these recordings come from the pre-stereo era and feature sound that is honest and atmospheric but hard and close will be enough to put this set out of the competition. But Schnabel was certainly among the greatest German pianists of his century, and anyone sufficiently interested in the repertoire will have to try him. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |

Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics $7.99 The Baby Einstein series continues with Lullaby Classics, a collection of lullabies from some of classical music’s best-known composers. The album begins with an aptly sparkling rendition of Mozart’s Variations (Twinkle, Twinkle) K265/300e; his Piano Sonata in D, K 576, 3rd Movement and Piano Sonata in C, K 545, 2nd Movement get similar treatment. Gentle pianos, harps, woodwinds, and keyboards give the album its restful but slightly playful sound, which works especially well on Mendelssohn’s Spring Song, Bach’s Minuet in G From Anna Magdalena, and Pachelbel’s Canon. The collection also features several other well-known pieces, including Debussy’s Preludes Book II, Clair de Lune, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Winter, RV267, 2nd Movement, Beethoven’s F? r Elise, Woo 59, and, of course, Brahms’ Waltz No. 15, Lullaby. While the album is on the long side, Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics is a restful, useful addition to any baby’s — or adult’s, for that matter — record collection. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

Beethoven: Bagatelles, Op. 126; Piano Concerto No. 1 $16.99 After making his recording debut with the Diabelli Variations in 2000, young Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski continued to show an affinity for Beethoven. He briefly returned to the German master’s music in a 2004 disc coupling Webern’s Variations and Bach’s English Suite in D minor, BWV 811, with Beethoven’s A flat major Sonata, Op. 110. But this 2008 disc is Anderszewski’s first full-fledged return to Beethoven, and it includes his first shot at one of his concertos. In this ingeniously juxtaposed program, Anderszewski opens with Beethoven’s last published work for solo piano, the six Bagatelles, Op. 126, and closes with his first published work for piano and orchestra, the Concerto No. 1 in C major. In the bagatelles, Anderszewski proves as impressive as he had in the Diabelli Variations. His technique is muscular but nuanced, his tone big but subtle, and his temper witty but tender — all qualities that work brilliantly in these quirky but endearing pieces. In the concerto, Anderszewski shows another side of himself, and while his technique and tone are essentially unaltered, his temper is much mellower and his interpretations more exuberant. This change entirely suits the concerto, a polished piece of writing by the young Beethoven in his best high classical mode. As he had in his earlier pairs of recordings of Mozart’s piano concertos, Anderszewski directs from the keyboard, and as before, it works out wonderfully well with the players of Deutschen Kammerphilharmonie Bremen engaging the piano player as the first among equals. The sound is slightly distant, but very atmospheric. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |

Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1 – Opp. 2 & 7 $29.98 For too long, too many people have underestimated Andr? s Schiff. Decca, his first Western record company, presented him as a Mozart/Schubert specialist whose Bach was the soft-focus alternative to Glenn Gould. Teldec, his second Western record company, presented him as a Brahms/Reger specialist whose Busoni was the modernist equivalent of Bach. At last, ECM, his third Western record company, grants him his due, understanding that Andr? s Schiff is certainly one of the finest classical pianists of his generation by releasing this, the first volume in a planned complete cycle of all Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Based on the evidence of these performances, Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms to one side, it is clear that Schiff is a Beethoven specialist, a pianist with commanding technique and expressive intensity, but above all great heart. Schiff is always himself, with his big, singing tone and complete control of form, and these are highly individualistic interpretations, yet Schiff is never more fully himself than when he is subsumed into the soul of the music. In the Largo con gran espressione of Op. 7, Schiff’s molding of phrases and shaping of paragraphs is at once wholly his and at the same time consumed in the inspiration of the music. This is Beethoven playing of temperament, taste, and, most importantly, transcendence. Recorded in the Tonhalle Zurich, ECM has ideally captured Schiff’s performance in an amazing facsimile of aural reality. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |
