Beethoven: Bagatelles, Op. 126; Piano Concerto No. 1

Beethoven: Bagatelles, Op. 126; Piano Concerto No. 1

$16.99

After making his recording debut with the Diabelli Variations in 2000, young Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski continued to show an affinity for Beethoven. He briefly returned to the German master’s music in a 2004 disc coupling Webern’s Variations and Bach’s English Suite in D minor, BWV 811, with Beethoven’s A flat major Sonata, Op. 110. But this 2008 disc is Anderszewski’s first full-fledged return to Beethoven, and it includes his first shot at one of his concertos. In this ingeniously juxtaposed program, Anderszewski opens with Beethoven’s last published work for solo piano, the six Bagatelles, Op. 126, and closes with his first published work for piano and orchestra, the Concerto No. 1 in C major. In the bagatelles, Anderszewski proves as impressive as he had in the Diabelli Variations. His technique is muscular but nuanced, his tone big but subtle, and his temper witty but tender — all qualities that work brilliantly in these quirky but endearing pieces. In the concerto, Anderszewski shows another side of himself, and while his technique and tone are essentially unaltered, his temper is much mellower and his interpretations more exuberant. This change entirely suits the concerto, a polished piece of writing by the young Beethoven in his best high classical mode. As he had in his earlier pairs of recordings of Mozart’s piano concertos, Anderszewski directs from the keyboard, and as before, it works out wonderfully well with the players of Deutschen Kammerphilharmonie Bremen engaging the piano player as the first among equals. The sound is slightly distant, but very atmospheric. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

C.P.E. Bach: The Solo Keyboard Music, Vol. 19

C.P.E. Bach: The Solo Keyboard Music, Vol. 19

$20.98

This release is part of a series by historical keyboardist Mikl? s Sp? nyi devoted to the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and played on a tangent piano. A bit more of an explanation of this intriguing instrument in the notes would have been helpful for general listeners. It was an early piano, eclipsed by the end of the 18th century in popularity by the more powerful fortepiano with its hammers. The instrument featured a small piece of wood actuated by the player’s finger striking a key and, unlike a clavichord, featured the rebound action of a piano. Its most distinctive feature was a series of stops that altered the sound substantially enough that the instrument was sometimes compared to an organ. Sp? nyi explores this exotic effect in the two small sets of variations on the album, especially the Variations on an Arietta in A major, Wq 118/2 (track 7), which be a joint work featuring variations by several composers. The opening Variations in F major on Ich schlief, da tr? umte mir, Wq 118/2, are an amateur work, interesting for students of early piano music but less so for others. The Keyboard Sonata in E flat major, Wq 65/42, and Sinfonia in F major, Wq 122/5, are of a different kind; as the name of the latter piece suggests, they represent Bach’s attempt to transfer orchestral effects to the piano, and they might easily have been direct ancestors to Mozart’s Piano Sonata in D major, K. 284. The tangent piano works beautifully in these pieces and suggests possible use as well in the sonatas of Mozart (who knew the instrument and called it a Spattisches Klavier after one of its makers) and Haydn (whose keyboard music was deeply and admittedly influenced by that of C.P.E.). The miscellaneous music on this recording, designated as nothing more than “Various Pieces from the 1760s” in the album’s subtitle, stands to the side of the mainstream of C.P.E. Bach’s output, and there is no example of the dramatic empfindsamer Stil for which he is probably most popula…

 The Essential Rudolf Serkin

The Essential Rudolf Serkin

$13.99

In his time, from the early ’30s through the late ’80s, Rudolf Serkin was acknowledged to be one of the great pianists. And in his repertoire — that is, from Bach through Brahms — Serkin was one of the greatest pianists. But Serkin’s time passed with his death in 1991, and contemporary pianists and critics rarely site him as one of the masters of the keyboard. This 2008 Sony-BMG two-disc set called The Essential Rudolf Serkin attempts to readjust the balance by presenting selections from the pianist’s vast number of recordings for Columbia. Naturally, all of it is drawn from his recordings of Austro-Germanic composers with solo works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn, concerted works by Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Mozart, and even a movement from a chamber work by Brahms. Though some listeners might regret that some works are presented in excerpted form — only the first movement of Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto? — few could complain about the variety of the program.Nor, one trusts, could any complain about the quality of the performances. It is true that Serkin’s clean phrasing, discrete pedaling, and steady tempos are wholly unlike the more overtly flamboyant pianists of the time and some listeners may find his playing dry and even severe. But his musical mastery and interpretive intensity more than compensate for these so-called shortcomings and listeners with open ears may hear past Serkin’s austere surface to his immense depths and glorious heights. Try, for example, his wonderfully poetic account of Schubert’s A flat major Impromptu or his grandly heroic reading of Schumann’s Introduction and Allegro appassionato, and if these move you, the remainder of the set will be well worth hearing. Then, if the rest of the performances please, try seeking out Serkin’s full-length recordings. Columbia’s stereo sound is cool, clear, and richly detailed. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

USED: Bach: Suite Fran? aise No. 5; Overture in the French Style

$6.99

Pianist Piotr Anderszewski made his major-label debut as violinist Viktoria Mullova’s accompanist on a pair of Philips discs of violin sonatas by Jan? cek, Prokofiev, Debussy, and Brahms released in 1995 and 1997. He then made a recording for Plexa of Bach solo keyboard works in 1999 before hitting the big time with a Virgin/EMI contract in 2000. A decade later in 2010, Harmonia Mundi re-released Anderszewski’s Plexa recordings on the budget-priced Musique d’abord label, and for those who missed them, here’s another chance to hear his take on Bach’s Fifth French Suite and Overture in the French Manner. They are, as Anderszewski’s most dedicated fans already know, stupendous. There’s no question of technique — the Polish pianist plays everything here with not the least sign of strain — nor of intelligence — his performances are absolutely lucid with every line of counterpoint clear and every line integrated into a unified whole — nor of sensitivity — lines are not merely lines but melodies with their own rise and fall — nor of spirituality — there are emotional depths here that only the greatest pianists have plumbed. Recorded in crisp, clear digital sound, this disc should be heard by anyone who enjoys great Bach or great piano playing. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
